My name is Morgan Lewis, and I am the Reel Stories Instructor and Community Engagement Specialist. This month, I attended the Black Women in Film summit hosted by the Black Women Film Network in Atlanta Georgia! I got to sit in on five sessions; Mic Check: Podcasting & Audio Producing, Pitch Perfect: Turning my Idea Into a Reality, Inside the Writers Room, Where the Money Resides: Funding Your Film, and The Plug: I Need Representation.
Each session was led by amazing Black women industry professionals that discussed ways to pitch films to networks, how to write scripts for award shows and ways to secure funding for independent films. I also got to attend their BWFN luncheon where Tabitha Brown, Danielle Deadwyler, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Tammy Williams and Cas Sigers Beedles (and more) were awarded. What a phenomenal and empowering event!
The Black women in film summit was such an incredible event. I am so thankful I got attend and be surrounded by such powerful and creative women who are consistently changing the narrative for black women in cinema. Leaving the summit I was so inspired and learned so much about showing up and betting on myself. I can’t wait to attend the next one!
